Early Life — The Wandering Years (1960–1977)

Born 1960 in Rome, NY. His father left military service and the family moved through Michigan, Madison, and Chicago before relocating to London (1967) and then Paris (1968).

Fred spent nearly a decade in Paris — attending ASP, Jean de la Fontaine, and the Lycée de Sèvres, earning his Bac in 1977. Those years shaped him: immersed in French culture, languages, and a world far from where he started. His parents separated during this period; his father later met and married Gita, originally from Cologne.

The Education Years (1978–1984)

Cornell for his BA in Mathematics (1978–1981), then Stanford for his PhD in Operations Research & Applied Mathematics.

Academically prolific — published in IEEE Transactions on Pattern Recognition in 1986. During this period his mother remarried (Dave), and family life continued to evolve across coasts.

Wall Street & First Companies (1985–1995)

After Stanford: Bechtel, then Salomon Brothers doing bond arbitrage, then Greenwich Capital. Married Louise in 1985.

In 1992, he founded Fauve Software in North Carolina — his first company. Released it in 1993, divorced Louise that same year. Sold Fauve to Macromedia in 1995 and moved to San Francisco.

The Builder Years (1996–2014)

SF → LA. A relentless sequence of companies:

Married Anouk in 2001 in LA. Divorced 2013. Bought the Chateau in 2004. Traveled widely: Africa, India, Patagonia, Singapore, Japan.

Crypto, Magda & the New Chapter (2015–Present)

Married Magda in 2016. Ski accident 2017. Sold Lynx to Metal in 2020 during Covid. Exited Proton in 2021.

Deep into Bitcoin and crypto — co-authored The Big Bitcoin Book and Bitcoin One Million, co-organized Bitcoin Alpha. Angel investing in AI-first startups.

In 2026: wrist accident, Chamonix, and building Xavior and 2718.fund. The new GTLD round is expected.

Based in Los Angeles. Wife Magda, son Vincent, dog Alaska.
